James V. Penfield, DDS

About
Dr. Penfield founded Legacy Dental Arts in 2007 with a simple goal: bring thoughtful, advanced dental care close to home. His experience in implants, sedation, lasers, and 3D imaging helps patients get more of the care they need from one familiar team.
Education & training
Dr. Penfield earned his dental degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, after a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Zoology from Brigham Young University. He has since completed advanced training in dental implants, cosmetics, lasers, three-dimensional radiology, sedation, and invisible braces, including study at the Kois Center and masterships through the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Beyond the office
Dr. Penfield grew up working in his father’s lumber business and paid his way through dental school as a scuba instructor. Overcoming cancer at a young age shaped the patient-first, compassionate way he practices. He moved to Alaska in 2004 with his wife in search of adventure, and they are raising four children here.

Amanda Kempainen, DMD

Dr. Kempainen brings hospital-residency training and a warm, relationship-first style to everyday dentistry—from checkups and fillings to cosmetic work.
Education & training
Dr. Kempainen earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine with high honors from Boston University School of Dental Medicine, then completed a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Hospital in Utah with a focus on advanced procedures and comprehensive care.

Dr. Kempainen believes the best dentistry starts with trust. She takes time to explain what she sees, lays out options plainly, and builds the kind of long-term relationships that make each visit easier than the last.
Beyond the office
Originally from upstate New York, she is happiest in the mountains—skiing, playing hockey, mountain biking, and hiking, usually with her yellow Labrador, Ida. She is fluent in Norwegian and travels to Norway whenever she can.

Michael Cady, DMD

About
Dr. Cady completed a 2.5-year post-doctoral residency in periodontics—the care of the gums and bone that hold your teeth—so gum disease treatment, laser therapy, and implant planning happen without a referral across town.
Education & training
Dr. Cady earned his dental doctorate from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, then completed a 2.5-year post-doctoral residency in periodontics at the University of Missouri–Kansas City.
