01

The levels of sedation

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): mild, fast-acting, wears off in minutes; you can drive home. Complimentary at Legacy.
  • Oral sedation: a pill before your visit; you’re drowsy and relaxed but responsive. You’ll need a ride.
  • IV sedation: deeper relaxation, adjusted in real time by the dentist; ideal for longer or complex procedures. You’ll need a ride.

Who benefits

Patients with dental anxiety or phobia, a strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb, or a lot of treatment to complete in fewer visits.

Helpful questions

Clear answers before you reach out.

Is sedation dentistry safe?+

Yes, when provided by trained clinicians with proper monitoring. Dr. Penfield has advanced sedation training through DOCS and ADMA, and your vital signs are monitored throughout. We review your health history at a consultation first.

Can I drive myself home?+

After nitrous oxide, yes—it wears off within minutes. Oral and IV sedation both leave you too drowsy to drive, so you’ll need a ride.

Is nitrous oxide an extra charge?+

No. Nitrous oxide is complimentary at Legacy for any appointment, including cleanings.

Will I remember the appointment?+

With nitrous oxide, yes. Most patients under oral sedation stay awake but deeply relaxed and remember little of the visit.
